Suzuki RM80 Parts

I had a guy approach me who is restoring a 1985 Suzuki RM80HF. The 2 chain guard parts from the bike were badly worn and it’s nearly impossible to get the parts now.

Unfortunately, there are also no files to download to just 3D print.

The only thing to do with this was to start from scratch and model each part based on the original. A certain amount of guesswork was involved as there was so much missing material that it was impossible to know exactly what the original looked like. You can see on the right hand part, on the bottom edge, just how much material has been lost with the chain rubbing against it.

I could have gone straight into modelling it but, to get the best representation of the original, what I did was scan it using a normal 2D scanner. I then imported this into Photoshop and created 2D profiles of each layer. I save these as individual files and converted them to SVG so that they could be imported into the modelling software, extruded to the right size and assembled into a part that could be saved and 3D printed.

Below, you can see the parts in situ. It’s the 2 white parts between the steel plates with the chain running between them.
