IKEA Tradfri Dimmer Holder for UK Backplate
This was one of my first prints designed from the ground up in Fusion 360.
Most of our house is automated, including LOTS of smart bulbs. This means that anyone switching a normal light switch off kills the “smart” bit and we’re just left with an expensive bulb. The problem is that we don’t have neutrals to the light switches meaning that it’s a pain to find off the shelf smart switches.
I’d done very little with Fusion 360 but this gave me a great opportunity to learn it in a bit more detail. Several hours of playing and I had this 3D printed holder.
What you see here is an early version but the principle is the same. It’s a standard UK size so it fits into a standard UK backbox. The old switch is just removed and wired through so that the bulb is permanently powered.
The plate you see in this image screws into the recess which means you can still use the magnet on the Tradfri dimmer to hold it in place or remove it if you want to.
So, there is nothing for people to have to learn. In our house, most bulbs are activated by motion and light sensors. But should someone reach for the switch they’ll find it exactly where they would expect. operate the switch and the light goes off or on. But in this case the switch is basically a remote control for the smart bulb.
